What Time Does Walmart Stop Selling Alcohol? Start Selling?

What time does Walmart stop selling alcohol? It’s a common question among many Walmart customers, and for a good reason. Due to demanding work schedules, not everyone has the luxury of visiting Walmart during what we can call “regular hours.” So knowing the Walmart alcohol hours in different states is helpful.

Walmart is a household name in the US. With nearly 5,000 locations, the grocery chain is known as a place where you can buy almost everything. Many customers flock to Walmart stores every day to shop for some of the cheapest foods to buy on a budget, make air mattress returns at Walmart, buy crushed ice, a Sunday newspaper, or buy scantron sheets. They also offer money services at Walmart MoneyCenter like cashing checks or buy cheap money orders.

Besides, Walmart stores carry a wide variety of alcoholic beverages, including beer, spirits, and wine.

While you can shop for everyday items at Walmart during regular Walmart return hours, buying beer at Walmart is a different ball game governed by different state and county rules.

Before you grab your car keys to make a late-night trip to Walmart or place your order online at Walmart.com, it helps to know the Walmart alcohol sales policy. You can save time and gas knowing when Walmart starts selling alcohol.

The big question is: What time does Walmart stop selling alcohol?

Lee También¿Cómo utilizar la aplicación Cash sin SSN? ¿Requiere un SSN?

Short Answer: Walmart alcohol hours vary by state and sometimes by county. Walmart starts or stops selling alcohol depending on the state and county a specific store is located. That’s basically because different states and counties set restrictions on where and when alcohol can be sold.

In most states, Walmart’s alcohol hours coincide with regular store hours. So, depending on the state, you’ll be able to buy alcohol every day of the week. For instance, Walmart starts selling alcohol as early as 6 am in Alabama, Arizona, California, and Hawaii, and 7 am in Florida and Arkansas. In other states like Delaware and the District of Columbia, Walmart alcohol sales start at 9 am or as late as 11 am in Utah.

How late Walmart stops selling alcohol also varies from state to state, but in most states, you’ll be able to buy alcohol late at night or early in the morning. Unlike in a few states like South Carolina, where Walmart stops selling alcohol as early as 7 pm, most Walmarts stop selling alcohol as late as 12 am and 2 am in states like Virginia, Vermont, Texas, Wyoming, Washington, and South Dakota. Walmart also has 24-hour liquor stores in Nevada that sell alcohol throughout the day.

Some states and counties restrict alcohol sales on Sundays. Other states set specific hours during the day when retail stores like Walmart should start selling alcohol. For instance, you can’t buy alcohol at Walmart on Sunday in Mississippi, while in Nebraska, Walmart sells alcohol from noon on Sunday.

Other counties restrict alcohol sales to state-owned stores. A few “dry” counties in New Jersey, Mississippi, and Arkansas prohibit all alcohol sales. Other states like Alaska don’t allow Walmart alcohol sales on election day until the polls are closed, while Tennessee prohibits Walmart alcohol sales on Thanksgiving day.

Frugal Reality Takeaway: Walmart alcohol hours vary depending on your state or county. It’s because Walmart doesn’t set the restrictions but simply plays by your state or county rules.

Why Buy Alcoholic Beverages at Walmart?

There are many reasons why you should consider buying alcoholic beverages at Walmart. The top reasons include:

Buy Alcohol From the Comfort of Your House

Driving to a liquor store after a long day of work is tiring. But, you don’t have to go! Walmart will deliver your favorite drink at your doorsteps. Simply push a few buttons to order your favorite bottle via the Walmart Grocery app or Walmart.com. You can also schedule in-store pickups.

However, the timings of online deliveries or in-store pickups will differ based on your location, your state laws, and your specific Walmart. If in-store shopping for alcohol is not available at a particular time, chances are that you will not be able to get it delivered either.

Variety of Alcoholic Beverages

Walmart stocks all kinds of beer, spirits, and wine from a variety of brands. You are likely to find your favorite wine, beer, and liquor brand at a great price.

Convenience

The convenience of accomplishing many tasks under one roof is the top reason to buy alcoholic beverages at Walmart. Each store offers tons of services that you can take advantage of while shopping.

The type of services at Walmart include cheap wheel alignment services, make duplicate keys, cash checks, get cash back, and many others. It’s a one-stop shop to help you save time and money on gas. You can cut extra trips to the liquor store, bank, or gas station in many cases.

Walmart is Everywhere

90% of Americans live within 15 miles of a Walmart. With around 5,000 store locations throughout the US, you’re more likely to cross a few Walmart stores down the streets before you can find a liquor store.

Buy Alcohol at an Odd Hour

Most Walmart stores stop selling alcohol late at night or early in the morning. Therefore, it makes Walmart one of the top places to buy alcoholic beverages during unusual hours.

Walmart Sells Alcohol in Every State

Unlike many retailers, Walmart manages to sell alcohol in every state. Despite variations in state laws, the grocery chain has a way of doing it. Thus, you’re likely to find a local Walmart in your state that sells beer and wine inside the grocery store. In some cases, it has a separate building next door that’s exclusively liquor.

Browsing

Buying wine, beer, or liquor for a lot of people is not just about getting the alcohol. People want to enjoy the browsing experience and be in control of what they’re purchasing. While you can certainly scroll through your phone or computer and look at items to add to your cart, it is not the same experience as you would have while walking through Walmart’s aisles.

For this reason, a large fraction of people who purchase alcohol from Walmart prefer to do it in person rather than doing it online. The number of options and large collection available to choose from is also a reason why people buy alcohol from Walmart.

Premium Alcohol

Gone are the days when you could only buy traditional beer and wine brands at Walmart. Walmart has now started offering more expensive spirits, which means that you no longer have to resort to it only for bargain deals on drinks.

This shift to premium alcohol from Walmart has made it a more lucrative option for shoppers everywhere. People now consider it a great store to buy alcohol from. You can learn more about this in this article about Walmart’s foray into premium alcohol.

What Do I Need to Buy Alcohol at Walmart?

Even though Walmart sells alcoholic beverages inside its grocery stores, don’t think that you’ll just walk in and grab your wine, beer, or spirits

To prevent liquor from slipping into the wrong hands, each state has rules and regulations on the sale and consumption of alcohol. For example, Walmart’s policy on selling alcohol restricts who can or can’t buy alcoholic beverages.

You need to be in the age of majority to buy alcohol at Walmart. That means you should be ready to present some form of identification like a valid driver’s license, military ID, or passport to verify you aren’t a minor. You won’t be able to buy beer at Walmart unless you can certify that you’re 18-years old and above.

Don’t try using online purchases to evade the rules. Even if you successfully manage to place an in-app or online purchase via Walmart.com, you must show a valid photo ID at the time of delivery. In addition, the recipient must verify their age before the package is released. Finally, make sure a responsible adult will be home to valid they’re over 21 when it arrives.

Online orders have also increased significantly, with Walmart stores selling beer 24 hours in states like Nevada. But there are store policies that establish cut-off times at which you can have beer delivered to your home. If you miss the delivery cut-off time, your order may be delayed until the next day.

Of course, no law or store policy can take the place of personal discipline. Make sure you consume alcoholic beverages responsibly. You don’t want to go broke or put your health at risk buying alcohol at Walmart.

Which Walmart Stores Sell Alcohol?

State rules and restrictions dictate where and when alcohol can be sold. Unfortunately, the wide variations in state laws make it hard for most retailers to sell alcohol. For example, some states prevent sales inside grocery stores like Walmart, while others allow alcohol sales in state-owned stores only.

Despite the varying restrictions, Walmart stores sell alcohol in all the states. As a result, the retailer knows the rules to sell alcoholic beverages in every state, either inside the grocery store or in a separate structure next to its main store.

For instance, New Hampshire restricts the sale of liquor to state-owned stores. To avoid breaking the law, Walmart stores in New Hampshire carry only beer and wine. Again, Utah laws ban alcohol sales inside grocery stores, but Walmart manages to navigate these restrictions by selling alcoholic beverages in a separate structure, next to its regular store.

Though you won’t find beer in every store, it’s safe to say that most Walmart locations sell alcohol throughout all the states.

What Type of Alcohol Does Walmart Sell?

Most Walmart stores sell liquor inside, including the following:

  • Beer – Individual cans or bottles, four-pack, six-pack, 12-pack, 15-pack, 18-pack, 20-pack, 24-pack, and even kegs at some locations.
  • Wine – Red, white, rose/blush, champagne, and sparkling
  • Spirits – Vodka, tequila, rum, gin, whiskey, liqueur, malt beverages, and prepared cocktails

What is Walmart’s Policy for Alcohol at Self Checkout?

Self checkout counters are quickly catching on at almost every Walmart location throughout the country. The beauty of self checkout is that you do not need to wait in line because of the higher number of counters available and automated systems that scan your orders quickly.

Self checkouts also ensure a lower cost of labor for Walmart, as they do not need to employ cashiers for these machines. Self checkout machines have proven to be quite popular with customers because of the time saving they offer.

However, there are some disadvantages to these machines as well. Like high initial costs, increased risks of theft, and issues with technology and equipment to name a few. This is especially true for older people who are not familiar with the technology, as they might be confused and end up taking more time than they would with a traditional cashier.

They might also pose a danger for underage drinking because there is nobody manning these machines.

Walmart gets around this problem by ensuring that you still need to show your acceptable ID to an employee before you’re allowed to scan your items. This has to be confirmed by an employee before your items can be checked out.

While this does defeat the purpose of time and labor saving, it makes sure that underage drinking is effectively restricted.

What Time Does Walmart Start and Stop Selling Alcohol by State?

Due to a wide range of state laws, Walmart starts and stops selling alcohol varies from state to state and sometimes, among different counties in the same state. Most Walmart supercenters sell alcohol during regular store hours. But some states and counties restrict what time you can or can’t buy alcohol at Walmart.

Can You Order Alcohol Online for Walmart Pickup?

Yes, you can order alcohol online for Walmart pickup as long as your state allows it. In early 2020, they started allowing customers to order alcohol online using Walmart’s grocery pickup service. You can schedule an in-store pickup via the Walmart Grocery app or on Walmart.com.

So far, customers from 29 states can benefit from this grocery pickup service. California, New Hampshire, Florida, Michigan, Texas, and Illinois are among the top states to order alcohol online for Walmart pickup.

Apart from scheduling an in-store pickup, you can also order alcohol online for home delivery via Walmart.com or the Walmart Grocery app where permitted. For instance, you can order alcohol delivery from nearly 200 Walmart stores in California and Florida and have your favorite drink delivered at home. Walmart continues to expand this service in line with local and state regulations.

What Is The Return Policy For Alcohol At Walmart?

If you’re not satisfied with the product that you purchased, Walmart has a return policy for alcohol. However, you can only return alcohol under these circumstances:

  • It can only be returned to the store that it was originally purchased from. You can’t get a bottle from one Walmart and try to return it at a different location.
  • Alcohol can only be returned if there is a product quality issue. If you simply don’t enjoy the taste of the beer, wine, or spirit that you bought, it doesn’t qualify for a return.
  • You should have the receipt for the alcohol that you purchased if you want to return it. Alcohol items without receipts won’t be accepted for returns.

Walmart has a policy for online alcohol orders as well. If you’ve purchased an item online, and the item that was sent to you was wrong, opened, or damaged, you can return the item by mail. Walmart doesn’t accept online orders that are returned to the store.

You can view your order history on the Walmart website. Once you find the item on the list that you want to return, select “Return by Mail”. This gives you the option to print your return label, which can then be packaged and dropped off at USPS or FedEx locations. You can read more about this by checking out the Walmart Returns webpage

While the rules, regulations, and timing mentioned in this article are accurate at the time of writing, you should keep in mind that the Covid-19 pandemic might impact your local Walmart’s current policies.
